Geisinger | Broker Bulletin

On Aug. 25, 18 months into the COVID-19 pandemic, we announced that all Geisinger employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Oct. 15. Currently about 70% of Geisinger employees have been vaccinated. Read more.

Highmark | Notice of Medical Loss Rebate 

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) includes a Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) requirement for health insurers. The MLR provision mandates that insurers rebate all or a portion of the premiums paid if a certain percentage of premiums collected are not spent on claims or quality improvement programs. In the Individual and Small Group Markets, the MLR threshold is 80% of premiums collected. In the Large Group Market, the threshold is 85%. This year, rebates will be distributed in the Individual, Small Group, Large Group Markets. All rebates are based on calendar year 2020. Read more.

UPMC Health Plan | To Change Small Group (1–50) ACA Offerings in Central & Eastern PA.

On Dec. 1, 2021, UPMC Health Plan will retire its small group ACA coverage. The affected groups that renew their coverage before December 2021 will maintain their coverage through their 2022 renewal date. Read more.

State Regulators to Target Marketers of ACA Coverage Alternatives

Some state insurance regulators want to crack down on companies that market health insurance products that could serve as an alternative to major medical insurance. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners is setting up a working group that will look at marketing of products that may pay for some health care but that do not meet the Affordable Care Act requirements for major medical insurance.
