Minn. clinic finds value in Medicare's annual wellness visit
Medicare's annual wellness visit is underused nationally, but Minnesota-based Allina Health was an early adopter and clinicians have seen particular value in using the Mini-Cognitive Assessment Instrument for Dementia test in patients each year, Allina's Pamela Mink told attendees of the Alzheimer's Association International Conference 2016. Data showed about 44% of eligible Allina patients had at least one annual wellness visit during the study period, compared with 11% nationally in 2013. Free registration. Read more.

Study finds gap in opioid addiction treatment in Medicare patients
An analysis of 2013 claims data found about 81,000 Medicare patients are on buprenorphine-naloxone therapy for opioid drug dependence, even though more than 300,000 have been diagnosed with opioid use disorder, researchers reported in JAMA Psychiatry. Researchers said the data indicate few family physicians who prescribe opioids also prescribe opioid agonist therapy, and they encouraged greater integration and promotion of this therapy among all prescribers. End-of-life costs lower for older Medicare patients
A Kaiser Family Foundation report found traditional Medicare claims for beneficiaries who died in 2014 showed per-person spending that year peaked at $43,353 for patients age 73, while per-patient spending was $33,381 at age 85 and $27,779 at age 90. The data may indicate a move toward hospice care at more advanced ages, researchers said. Read more.
