Zero-Dollar Select Generic Medications Tier
Prescription Drug Initiative Effective 1/1/24

UPMC Health Plan strives to provide both value and choice by giving our members access to high-quality, effective prescription drugs. As part of our efforts, we are launching the $0 Select Generic Medications Tier Prescription Drug Initiative for both fully insured and ASO groups effective Jan. 1, 2024.
As part of this initiative, certain medications will move to a new tier with no member cost share (deductible may still apply) called the Select Generic Medications Tier. The Select Generic Medications Tier will include generic blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, diabetes, and other medications.

Removing the cost share for these high-value generic drugs eliminates a barrier to medication adherence for patients with chronic conditions, contributing to lower overall health care costs through increased adherence. ASO groups are strongly encouraged to participate in this initiative, and they must notify us by June 2, 2023 if they want to opt out.
