CMS subsidy changes on two SilverScript PDPs

For 2022, CMS changed how much they subsidize monthly premiums for two different SilverScript PDPs. This impacts:

  • The SilverScript Smart Rx plan - This plan will not receive any premium subsidy in 2022.
  • The SilverScript Plus plan - This year, the subsidy for this plan may be significantly lower in some Medicare regions. Beneficiaries who receive Extra Help (Low Income Subsidy or LIS) may have an increase in premium of up to $23 more per month than they did in 2021, based on their LIS level and location.

When can you use a disaster/emergency Special Enrollment Period (SEP)?

A disaster/emergency SEP is only applicable to those beneficiaries who were prevented from enrolling during a given election period due to a declared disaster or emergency.

CMS strictly limits when the disaster/emergency SEP may be used. To qualify for this SEP the enrollee:

  1. Must have had a valid election period during the time of the declared disaster/emergency; and
  2. Must have been unable to elect a plan due to the disaster/emergency.

If these two conditions are not met, the enrollee may not enroll with this SEP.

See examples of disaster/emergency SEP’s.

Open Enrollment Period (OEP) retention tips

Below are a few tips to help you retain your members through OEP:

  1. Create easy-to-use materials to share with members. Just visit the Aetna Medicare Marketing Studio and select the 'Retain Your Business' section to see what’s available. You can download items in PDF format for free or pay to have them printed. They are personalized with your contact information.
  2. Contact your members early during OEP. Ask questions such as “Do you have your Aetna member ID card” and “Are you able to get your prescriptions filled?”
  3. Encourage your clients to attend an online member meeting. Welcome new members and help educate your clients about their 2022 plan. Members and prospects can locate meetings in their area on aetnamedicare.com.
