I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Gayle Owen Averyt, who passed away on May 14, 2024. Gayle's father, Edwin, co-founded Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company in 1937. After graduating from Harvard, Gayle joined Colonial Life, where he steadily rose through the management ranks. In 1970, upon his father's retirement, Gayle assumed the roles of Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He held these positions with distinction until 1993 when Colonial Life merged with Unum. Following the merger, Gayle became Chairman Emeritus of Colonial Life and served on Unum's board from 1993 to 1999. Gayle's passing is a significant loss for his family, friends, and the many colleagues who had the privilege of working alongside him at Colonial Life and Unum. We will never forget Gayle's leadership and positive impact on our company.
