Member Care Packages


To help keep our Medicare Advantage members healthy during the coming winter months, we will be sending a Highmark-branded package complete with health-related items, including a thermometer, personal protective equipment, a first aid kit, hand sanitizer and more with messaging focused on helping them better manage their health during the pandemic.

This message will also provide them with notice that they will subsequently receive a prepaid Mastercard gift card for having used medical services in 2020 (Group A). Or, for those members who have not yet used medical services in 2020 (Group B), their message will explain actions they can take before the end of 2020 in order to obtain the gift card. 

The gift card for Group A will be mailed to them directly in the weeks following receipt of their care package. For Group B, the gift card will be mailed to them automatically once a claim for a medical service in 2020 comes through our system. If they do not obtain a medical service before the end of the year, they will not receive the gift card.

 

Member Care Package FAQs 


Why are we doing it?
Helping ensure our members health and well-being are our top priorities. With the uncertainty of the pandemic and going into the winter months, we want to provide items members may need to stay healthy. We do it to help protect members and because we care.

Who is receiving a care package?
All Medicare Advantage Direct Pay and Employer Group members are receiving this care package. This does not include Medigap Blue or Blue Rx PDP members.

Will a member who has disenrolled for 1/1/2021 receive a care package?
Yes. All current members in 2020 will receive a care package.

When are packages going out?
Care packages will begin mailing 11/9 and continue through the month.

Will this be a surprise for members?
All members will receive a postcard in advance of the packages informing them they will receive a care package and to keep their eye out for it.

What’s included in the packages?
Members will receive a Highmark-branded kit with a letter explaining the contents and if they should expect to receive a subsequent gift card or if they need to take steps to do a rewardable activity to receive a gift card in the future. Specific kit contents are below:

Why doesn’t the package include any over-the-counter medicines like cough/cold medicine or ibuprofen?
We want to keep our members safe, and sometimes over the counter medicines can interact with prescription medicines they may be on or conditions they may have. Therefore, we thought it was best to focus on items that would be more universal to all members.

My <spouse/ partner> received a care package. Can I get one, too?
Unfortunately, care packages are for Medicare Advantage members only and we can’t make exceptions. If you are a Medicare Advantage member with Highmark, please note that care packages will be delivered into early December. If you are a Highmark Medicare Advantage member and have not received a package by mid-December, please call us using the number on the back of your ID card. Also, please note that many of the items in the care package can be shared.

I did not receive my care package. Can I get a new one package sent to me?
If you have not yet received a care package, please note that in-home deliveries will continue into early December. Only those with non-emergent medical claims are eligible for a gift card and will be delivered after you received your care package. Please also know that care packages are for Medicare Advantage members only. Please contact Member Service using the number on back of your ID card by mid-December if you still haven’t received either. 

The included thermometer seems complicated. Can you advise on how to set it up?
The thermometer includes an insert with a specific number that the manufacturer provided you can call for assistance in setting it up. That number is 833-490-1446.

I’m a New member. Will I receive a care package and a gift card?
New member care packages will be fulfilled twice in December to capture those who enrolled with an effective date prior to 1/1/2021. If a New member has a non-emergent medical claim in 2020 and we receive that claim by 3/27/21, we will fulfill their gift card as well.

Are other health insurance providers doing this?
Yes. Other health plans are doing something similar in nature.


 

Gift Card FAQs
 

Who is eligible for a gift card?
All Medicare Advantage Direct Pay and Employer Group members are eligible to receive a gift card. However, a qualifying* medical claim must be completed in 2020 and received by Highmark by 3/27/21. Utilization of Rx benefits and ER visits (if this is their only type of claim) do not count; however, all other health care services would qualify for the gift card.

Will a member who has disenrolled for 1/1/2021 receive a gift card?
If the member was a current member in 2020 and had a non-emergent medical claim in 2020 that was received by 3/27/21, they will be sent a gift card.

When are gift cards being mailed?
Group A members: For members who already have used a medical service, gift cards will begin mailing late November to those who received their initial care package stating they would receive one.

 

  • Direct Pay members – 11/24
  • Employer Group members – 11/30.


Group B members: For members who were advised they still need to do a preventive medical service to receive a gift card, we will begin mailing these out on 12/7 and each week in December. Beginning in January, we will fulfill the beginning of the month through April 1, 2021 to capture any 2020 claims received by 3/27/21 for these members.
 

  • Weekly fulfillment of orders – 12/7 through 12/28/20
  • Monthly fulfillment of orders – 1/29 through 4/30/21


How much is the value of the gift card? Where can the gift cards be used?

For Direct Pay members, the value of the gift card is $100.
The prepaid Mastercard gift cards can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted. The prepaid Mastercard cannot be used to purchase items such as alcohol, guns or tobacco.

How does a member receive a gift card?
Members who had a non-emergent only medical claim in 2020 that Highmark has received and processed (with any claim status – Approved, Denied, Partially Approved) by 3/27/21 will receive a letter in their care package advising them they will receive a separate mailing with a $100 gift card (Direct Pay members) and $50 (Employer Group members).

For members who were advised they still need to do a preventive medical service to receive a gift card, we will begin mailing these out on 12/7 and each week in December. Beginning in January, we will fulfill the beginning of the month through April 2021.

How do I activate my gift card?
Much like receiving a new debit card in the mail, all members will have a sticker on their gift card that will include a 1-800 number to call to activate as well as the option to log on to Mastercard’s online portal via a URL to activate their card. The member will be asked a question specific to them (zip code tied to member, ID#, etc.) in order to complete activation.


*Qualifying is defined as a non-emergent only medical claim in 2020 that Highmark has received and processed (with any claim status – Approved, Denied, Partially Approved) by 3/27/21.

 



 

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Producer Portal Maintenance Scheduled for Friday Night (11/13/20)

Highmark's Producer Portal will be down for scheduled maintenance starting at 11:00pm this Friday, November 13. It should be back online no later than 6:00am Saturday, November 14.
