How closely do IUL illustrations reflect real life?
 
Not all indexed universal life (IUL) insurance products are created equally, and neither are their illustrations. Generally, illustrations don’t show the negative effects a down year can have on the policy’s cash value accumulation. While a zero percent floor protects from negative cash value growth due to index performance, policy expenses can result in negative cash value growth. Take a look  at this hypothetical example of a down year, plus a historical lookback on North American’s original IUL product, the first generation of Custom Builder IUL.
