Sending your child back to the classroom this fall? Here’s a pediatrician’s advice for keeping them healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Back-to-school looks very different this year. And parents everywhere are asking themselves (and their pediatricians), “should I send my child back to school?” There’s no doubt that school plays a critical role in kids’ lives, not only for their educational needs, but for their emotional well-being. But with COVID-19 cases rising in some areas, and the uncertainty of the pandemic, it’s a difficult decision to make.

How to keep your kids healthy at school this fall:
  • Practice good hand hygiene
  • Pack a hand sanitizer in their bag
  • Cough and sneeze like Dracula
  • Watch for signs of illness including lesser-known viruses and infections
  • Know when to keep your child home from school
Geisinger’s Dr. Cummings recommends, "When in doubt, it’s probably best to err on the side of caution and keep your child home, and don’t be afraid to call your pediatrician for advice.”

“We’re here to share the facts and have these discussions with you. If you don’t have a well visit scheduled, you can use myGeisinger to message your pediatrician, call their office or schedule a telemedicine appointment to discuss your concerns.”

REMINDER: A cost sharing update about COVID-19 antibody testing
Q: Is COVID-19 antibody testing covered?

A: COVID-19 antibody testing will be covered if a member:
  • Experienced symptoms consistent with COVID-19 infection but tested negative; or
  • Recovered from a documented COVID-19 infection and is now considering plasma donation; or
  • Is a child with suspected Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C)
We are waiving member cost sharing for antibody testing for both in- and out-of-network. If a member does not have an out-of-network benefit, antibody testing will be covered and cost sharing for it will be waived as well.
