What you need to know about newborn coverage
When a baby is born to a plan subscriber, the newborn is automatically covered for 31 days from the date of birth with no cost share/deductible. No additional premium is charged for the newborn during that time. Within the first 60 days, the subscriber must submit a subscriber application change form to permanently add their newborn.

Coverage will be effective on the date of birth. The newborn must be a child who is natural born, adopted or legally placed for adoption, or under the legal guardianship or legal custodianship of the subscriber or the subscriber’s eligible dependent spouse.

News at-a-glance
  • DOL, HHS and the Treasury issued a new proposed rule this week regarding flexibility of grandfathered group health plans under the ACA. The proposed rule seeks to adjust current requirements that group plans must follow to maintain their status and, if finalized, the rule would allow group plans to impose higher cost-sharing requirements while maintaining grandfathered status.
  • The House Energy & Commerce Committee unanimously approved the BENES Act on Wednesday, a bill that would make several changes to the complex rules for enrolling in Medicare Part B that NAHU has long advocated for. Now that the bill has been approved by the committee, it is eligible to be considered for a vote on the House floor.
