One Week Remaining for Legislative Council Applications
NAHU’s Legislative Council is responsible for developing and advocating for market-based solutions which provide for continued and improved choice, accessibility and affordability of health, disability, and long-term care insurance, employee benefits, and other products designed to meet the health, financial and retirement security needs of the American people. It meets monthly and provides legislative advice to the NAHU Board of Trustees, monitors state and federal legislative and regulatory activity, develops legislative and regulatory policy positions for the association, reviews requests for use of Legislative Defense Funds, oversees grassroots initiatives, shares information, and promotes communication concerning NAHU legislative policy among NAHU's members and chapters. If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, now is your chance!

NAHU is excited to announce that the volunteer committee applications are now available for the Legislative Council, Media Relations Committee, Membership Council, Leading Producers Round Table Committee and Professional Development Committee. There is only one general volunteer committee application, which allows you to specify your position(s) and committee(s) of interest. Whether you are interested in Legislative Council or a particular Working Group, you will fill out the same application! To be considered for a position, please submit your application no later than May 10.

The Legislative Council provides policy advice to the NAHU Board of Trustees and promotes communication concerning NAHU's government affairs efforts to NAHU's members and chapters. The Council is looking to fill just a few positions, but there are many subcommittees and working groups of the Council that need members too, so we encourage all members with a strong interest in health policy to apply. If you have any questions, please contact Daniel Parker.

Legislative Council Subcommittees:
  • The Cost Containment Working Group is charged with considering various measures that employers, individuals, providers, insurers, and the federal and state governments can employ to reduce the cost of medical care and coverage.
  • The Prescription Drugs Taskforce is a newly formed group which will examine the proposals from Congress and the Trump administration to lower drug costs, and offer responses to how these proposals will actually effect the market and consumers.
  • The Employer-Based Health Plans Working Group considers major issues affecting employer-provided coverage, including employer reporting, the Cadillac Tax, stop-loss insurance, self-funding/level funding and various compliance issues.
  • The Medicare Advisory Group reviews relevant changes to Medicare coverage and develops resources for members to advise their clients on products. The group is tasked with writing the quarterly Medicare newsletter, which includes articles on Medicare and legislative and regulatory updates in the industry.
  • The Individual Market Working Group advises the Legislative Council on issues affecting the individual market, including the federal and state marketplaces and off-exchange products.
  • The Long-Term Care Advisory Group is charged with reviewing changes to the long-term care landscape including legislative and regulatory proposals and product offerings. The group oversees the long-term care portal, which is designed to help NAHU members improve their fluency of long-term care insurance and contains general LTCI resources, education, current news and announcements, links to videos, publications and articles, and more.
