Humana Inc. announced the deal this week, adding that it was effective July 1.

That was the date on which Harrisburg-based Pinnacle acquired Lancaster Regional Medical Center and Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center in Lancaster County, Memorial Hospital in York County and Carlisle Regional Medical Center in Cumberland County from for-profit Tennessee-based Community Health Systems Inc.

Terms of the agreement with Humana were not released.

It provides for uninterrupted in-network access for Humana Medicare Advantage Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) health plan members at the four hospitals.

Based in Kentucky, Humana is a for-profit insurer with Pennsylvania offices in Mechanicsburg, Philadelphia, Wilkes-Barre and Williamsport.

In the days following PinnacleHealth’s takeover of the four hospitals, Capital BlueCross also announced that the facilities would remain in its provider network.

Similar coverage questions could arise again soon, as PinnacleHealth is poised to merge with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in a deal that could take effect this fall.

In an interview earlier this month, officials with UPMC rival Highmark Health Plan said their company has been in talks with UPMC and PinnacleHealth about ensuring access to the system for its members once the merger is complete.

Deb Rice-Johnson, president of the plan, expressed confidence that the talks will result in a deal that is beneficial to Highmark’s insurance customers.
