GEISINGER AND HIGHMARK ANNOUNCE LETTER OF INTENT FOR JOINT VENTURE

Changing market dynamics are leading to increased collaborations and mergers that are transforming the face of health care in Pennsylvania. These mergers have raised concerns about access to care for Highmark members and patients in the communities we serve. To continue to place the customer first, we are taking certain actions to ensure our members and patients continue to have access to high quality and affordable care.

I am excited to share that Geisinger Health System and Highmark Inc. announced today the signing of a letter of intent to create a clinical joint venture. With this, we will be able to provide high-value, high-quality community-based care and greater patient choice for health care consumers and businesses. Together, we will have an emphasis in north central Pennsylvania and will explore creating a clinical network that is patient-focused, physician-oriented and community-based, with comprehensive access for both Highmark and Geisinger Health Plan members, including those in Medicare Advantage Plans.
