The Dauphin County-based insurance company has about 1,900 employees at offices and retail locations throughout Central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. The employees who lost their jobs received severance packages that include continued company-paid health care.

“Like so many other companies, Capital BlueCross is continually assessing our business in a constantly changing environment as needed to deliver excellence to our customers as effectively as possible,” the company said in a statement.

The layoffs will help the company allocate resources to other business needs, the statement continues.

A Capital BlueCross spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

The announcement comes just days after competitor Highmark announced that it was eliminating 118 jobs, including 37 in Cumberland County. Those cuts affected Highmark’s technology subsidiary, HM Health, not its insurance operation.
