The IRS could have an effect on the nation's uninsured rate by informing tax filers who claim the earned income tax credit that they might qualify for Medicaid or financial help with health insurance, according to an Urban Institute study. About 1.1 million uninsured people in families who receive the earned income tax credit are eligible for subsidies on health plans purchased through a publicly run exchange, and another 4.1 million are eligible for Medicaid, according to study co-author Linda Blumberg.
