The end of August may not be the official end of summer, but with school starting and Labor Day approaching, summer is no doubt drawing to a close.  But don’t let that depress you.  The end of summer puts us closer to the start of 2016 Open Enrollment on November 1, 2015.

Sales tip: Now is the perfect time to get all your ducks in a row and be prepared for Open Enrollment by reviewing your Book of Business on Producer World®. This resource gives you the perfect starting point to review your current client list.  While reviewing your Book of Business, be sure to check out other resources on Producer World.  We have some exciting improvements coming to Producer World that we’ll be announcing soon.

CMS approves first vendor to offer FFM certification registration and training

The National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) has been selected as one of only three vendors to provide the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-approved Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM) agent/broker training. The training will begin later this summer and the official date will be announced by CMS.

Remember, all agents and brokers must complete the FFM registration and training in order to assist consumers with enrollment through the FFM.

Make sure your clients don't lose their subsidy for the 2016 plan year

We want to make you aware that some of your clients who received an Advanced Premium Tax Credit (APTC) or income-based cost sharing reduction (CSR) in 2014 may have recently received a notice from the IRS reminding them to file their 2014 federal tax return with Form 8962. They must do this to keep their APTC and/or CSR for the 2016 plan year.

We strongly encourage you to reach out to your clients who may have purchased a health insurance plan through the Marketplace and received an APTC and/or CSR in 2014 to ensure they have filed their 2014 taxes with Form 8962:

  • If they have filed their taxes with Form 8962, they don't need to do anything.

  • If they have not filed their taxes with Form 8962, they must take action (i.e., electronically file their 2014 return and Form 8962) by the end of August or they will lose their APTC and/or CSR beginning January 1, 2016.

  • In addition to your outreach, and in an effort to minimize the impact to these members, we made automated calls the week of August 17th.

If your clients have questions, they can contact the IRS directly at www.irs.gov/aca or 1.800.829.0922 or speak with their tax advisor.

On-exchange client reminder

As an important reminder, if you sold products on the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM), remind your clients to report any life changes at https://www.healthcare.gov/reporting-changes. Sample changes that need to be reported are:

  • Changes to income

  • Change of address

  • Marriage or divorce

A complete list of changes needing to be reported can be found at www.healthcare.gov. Your clients can report any life changes to the FFM in one of three ways: Online, by phone, or in person.  It is important that clients keep their profile up to date on the FFM to avoid any issues with their coverage, especially if they are receiving subsidies on their plans.

Referrals make the world go around

Don’t forget to check back with your existing clients to see if they have friends or family that need a health plan. Word of mouth is an incredibly powerful tool when it comes to finding new clients. Ask for those referrals.  This might jog a client’s memory about a relative’s health plan search or a friend’s need for new coverage thanks to a qualifying event.  Referrals are a great benefit to a strong broker-client relationship.

Coming soon: commission system improvements

We are investing in improvements to our commission system.  These enhancements will be behind the scenes and will automate and consolidate data, with the end result being an improved experience for you.  We expect the first round of improvements to go into effect in September and another round in January 2016.
