As announced in the press last Wednesday, Anthem, Inc., a Blue Cross Blue Shield insurer that does business in 14 states, was the target of a sophisticated, external attack. Independence Blue Cross understands the concerns that have been raised by this cyber-attack.
It is important to know that IBC’s information system was not breached. However, Anthem and Independence have made arrangements so that IBC members can receive medical care when they travel to a state that Anthem serves, and so that IBC customers headquartered in Philadelphia can provide coverage for their employees who live and work in Anthem markets. Anthem does business in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
Because of IBC’s arrangement with Anthem, there is a possibility that data about Independence customers has been compromised.
IBC is working closely with Anthem and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association to understand the full scope of this issue and if any IBC members were impacted. IBC will continue to monitor the situation very closely and keep everyone apprised.
For your review and reference is a formal IBC statement containing key questions and answers regarding the impact of this cyber attack. We encourage you to share this information with your clients.
